Orlando is home to the University of Central Florida, the second-largest university campus in the United States in terms of enrollment. The city is also a major industrial and hi-tech center. The metro area has a $13.4 billion technology industry employing 53,000 people and is a nationally recognized cluster of innovation in digital media, agricultural technology, aviation, aerospace, and software design. More than 150 international companies, representing approximately 20 countries, have facilities in Metro Orlando. Until Walt Disney began building his empire in the early 1970s, Orlando was a small, sleepy, Southern town. It grew rapidly during the 1980s and into the first decade of the 21st century. Musically, it is probably best known for its pop-rock boy bands, NSync and the Backstreet Boys, who came on the scene in the mid ‘90s. Today, the city is home to many more musical genres – goth, emo, punk, alternative metal and screamo bands. The Vans Warped Tour, containing metalcore/screamo bands takes place in Orlando, annually. Hip hop, rock, reggaeton, and Latino music scenes are all also active within the city.
Orlando has many classical music fans. The Orlando Philharmonic is Central Florida’s resident professional orchestra, comprised of accomplished musicians recruited from around the world. The Bach Festival is an 81-year old classical music organization that performs regularly at the Knowles Memorial Chapel on the grounds of Rollins College in nearby Winter Park. The Florida Opera Theatre is the area’s professional opera company.
In addition, because the Central Florida area is home to many professionally-trained theme park actors, singers, and performers, the city is also well-known for hosting one of the country’s premiere cabaret festivals. Founded in 2002, the Orlando Cabaret Festival showcases local, national, and internationally renowned cabaret artists who perform at the Mad Cow Theatre in Downtown Orlando, each spring.
Orlando’s large musical venues include the brand new Dr. Phillips Center for Performing Arts, the Amway Center, the Citrus Bowl, and the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center. Smaller venues include The Social, Will’s Pub, The Plaza, The Abbey, The Beacham, Hard Rock Live Orlando, and the House of Blues. Many clubs, bars, restaurants, and lounges in Central Florida also showcase the area’s many jazz, blues, rock, and folk musicians.

For several years, Orlando was known as “Hollywood East” because of the many movie studios in the area. Major motion picture production was active in the city during the mid-to-late 1990s, but has slowed considerably over the last few decades. The Walt Disney Feature Animation studios, where such animated films as Mulan and Lilo & Stitch were made, no longer operates out of the Walt Disney World Resort, and Nickelodeon Studios, which produced hundreds of hours of TV game shows targeted at children, no longer operates out of Universal Studios Florida. However, Full Sail University, located in Winter Park, draws a very large number of new-media students in the areas of video game design, film, show production, and computer animation, and Orlando is still a large production center for television shows, direct-to-video productions, and commercial production.
Probably the most famous film-making moment in the city’s history occurred with the implosion of Orlando’s previous City Hall for the movie Lethal Weapon 3. Orlando’s indie film scene has been active since The Blair Witch Project was made in 1999. In 2003, Charlize Theron won an Academy Award for Monster, which was filmed in the area. Some other studio and independent films that were shot in or around Orlando include: Tomorrowland, The Queen of Versailles, The Waterboy, Marvin’s Room, Lethal Weapon 3, Jaws 3-D, Days of Thunder, Parenthood, China Moon, Letters to God, Passenger 57, Mr. Baseball, Contact, Apollo 13, Honey I Blew Up the Kid, The Perfect Storm, Cocoon, Magic Mike, and Edward Scissorhands.
Central Florida hosts several film festivals every year. The most prominent is the Florida Film Festival which takes place in venues around the area, most notably at the Enzian Theater in Maitland.
