Vinyl Records Pressing Process
Choose your vinyl records package and upgrades
Select your package, starting from a basic vinyl package and adding or removing elements to suit your needs. Need help deciding? Our team is available 24/7 via email and Monday–Friday at 888-473-5289.
What's included in the standard vinyl records package:
- Records in standard black (color vinyl available — see our color options)
- Full-color jacket
- Full-color center labels
- White paper inner sleeves
- Audio check at lacquer cutting
- Shrink wrap
Minimum order quantity: standard 100 units; boutique 300 units.
Estimated turnaround: most vinyl projects land in 6–9 weeks; faster is possible in a pinch. We confirm a firmer timeline at quote or once your order is placed.
Vinyl record weight — 140g or 180g?
180g: thicker, more rigid, premium feel. 140g: lighter, flexible, classic standard. Sound quality is influenced far more by mastering, cutting, plating, pressing QC, and cooling than by weight alone.
Vinyl record speed — 33 1/3 vs 45 RPM?
33 1/3: more minutes per side, best for full albums. 45: shorter sides, often higher potential fidelity.
Vinyl record inner sleeves — printed, plain paper, or poly-lined?
Printed: premium presentation and room for lyrics/art. Plain paper: simplest, most budget-friendly. Poly-lined: better scuff protection.
Vinyl record jackets — single pocket, gatefold, or tip-on?
Single pocket: standard for 1 LP. Gatefold: book-style, ideal for 2 LPs and expanded art. Tip-on (boutique only): wrapped paper over board for a vintage, premium feel.
Vinyl record pack-ins — posters, stickers, booklets
Extra goodies that make a record feel more collectible: booklets (lyrics, photos, liner notes), posters or folded posters, and decals/stickers. Pack-ins are available via our boutique services.
Submit your order and files
After ordering you'll get a confirmation email, then within 24 hours an email with art templates, the track form, vinyl color options if applicable, and project details. Submit everything as soon as possible to keep the project moving.
Audio file specs: WAV or AIFF (no MP3); 24-bit preferred; 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, or higher. Keep side lengths realistic — under ~22 minutes per side preserves better level and clarity.
Art Templates. Art file specs: include bleed on edge-to-edge elements; remove non-printing guides; supply CMYK, 300 DPI minimum.
How a vinyl record is made
Three stages: cutting, plating, pressing. A mastering engineer cuts the final audio into a lacquer with a heated stylus; the lacquer is electroplated into metal stampers; the stampers press a PVC puck with the two labels under heat and pressure, the disc is cooled and trimmed, then settled, sleeved, and packed by hand.
Should I order a test vinyl pressing?
Test vinyl pressings confirm how your music translates to vinyl and catch distortion, sibilance, noise, or skips before the full run. Strongly recommended for larger pressings and first-time projects. No turntable? Ask about the digital test pressing option.
Digital test pressings are available for our boutique vinyl services clients. A digital test pressing is an audio recording made from your physical test pressing, letting you review your record's sound even if you don't have a turntable.
What colors can I press in?
Hundreds of colors. Select a color family at ordering and we send available options and proven combinations. Beyond the standard menu — glow, glitter, metallic, galaxy — is available through Boutique Vinyl.
Bison Disc's Boutique Vinyl Services are for projects that need more than a standard pressing can offer. We're talking specialty vinyl effects, custom color combinations, and elevated packaging options that fall outside the menu of a typical pressing run — plus a level of one-on-one creative collaboration most of our competitors aren't set up to provide. This is our most personalized vinyl tier, available on runs of 300 records or more: we guide you through every choice, then build a spec to your budget and deadline. Boutique work requires dedicated press time and premium materials, so it carries a higher price point than our standard service — but the result is a record shaped entirely around your vision, not a template.
Boutique Vinyl Project Prices Include: custom vinyl effects (galaxy, splatter, dual-tone, more); premium jackets (tip-on, embossing, foil, specialty materials); project consultation; test pressings included on boutique projects.

Please note: Boutique is quoted per project and typically costs more due to custom materials and hands-on steps. Still exploring? Start with standard pricing and add select premium upgrades.
